- The objective of this work was to understand the micromechanical deformation and breakage of magnetic particle chains under shear stresses. An investigation into the effect of varying fluid shear rates on the magnetic strength of linear magnetic particle chains in a non-magnetic fluid was performed using Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations. 5 micrometre particles with the density of iron (7800 kg/m³) were initially centred within a working space. Varying fluid stresses corresponding to shear rates ranging from 1000 s⁻¹ to 105000 s⁻¹ were simulated, to determine the effect of the chain deformation at different particle chain lengths (less than 25 particles), at different values of magnetic strength (0.008-1.0 T/µ0). It was found that as the particle chain length increases, the fluid shear required to break the chain decreases according to a power law relationship based on the fluid shear rate and the number of particles in the chain. We demonstrated that the use of Mason number traditionally used in the study of magnetorheological fluids did not provide a good criterion to determine the breakage of particle chains.
